WHAT IS R2EC?

R2EC aims to develop a scalable system of decentralized, interacting energy cells with a high concentration of local renewable energy production.

THE PROJECT

Within the framework of the European research project R2EC, with partner organisations from Norway, Belgium and Austria, decentralized energy cells based on renewable energies are to be simulated and relevant technologies tested. For this purpose, several model energy regions were selected in Austria, Belgium and Norway in order to collect real consumption data and to investigate the contribution of regional energy cells to the success of the energy system transformation.

YOUR BENEFIT

Due to the stronger participation in the energy market of the participating prosumers and the increased use of locally or regionally available resources, as well as locally produced renewable energy, the independence of jointly acting self-suppliers is strengthened, while at the same time the grid is stabilized and the economic efficiency of the plants used is improved for all parties involved.

THE SERVICES

New opportunities due to reduced grid fees within a renewable energy community as well as changed and improved framework conditions e.g. direct trade within the community, joint investments, promotion of energy independence, etc. may already be possible at regional level.

OUR GOALS

Solar and wind energy are weather-dependent. This poses great challenges to our current energy system, as power generation and consumption must be synchronized or cleverly regulated or stored. This is where the R2EC project aims to provide valuable insights to make the energy system of the future sustainable, economical and resilient.

OUTLOOK

The use of renewable energies can be maximised at local and regional level through the coordinated interaction of production, storage and consumption - at system level, the intelligent coordination of regional energy cells with one another can provide a sustainable contribution towards overall system optimisation and resilience, with users perceiving themselves as an active part of the value chain.

THE PARTNERS

The consortium includes companies from the field of intelligent electricity management and corresponding monitoring technologies (e.g. EVN, 4wardEnergy, GreenWatch, Efficent, NORCE) as well as partners with expertise in the field of user integration and business model development (e.g. FH Technikum Wien, Efficent, Becquerel Institute, TPPV) and with experience in international electricity market regulations and the simulation of energy cells (e.g. Becquerel Institute, 4wardEnergy). Furthermore, R2EC is a part of the Austrian Green Energy Lab, Austrias largest innovation lab.

OUR VISION

A stable, sustainable and economic cellular energy system in which regional energy cells have achieved a high degree of energy independence through tailor-made models for the use of regional renewable energies by concurrently supporting the overall system resilience through interaction with other cells.
